In what ways does the media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
at a technical level, we used continuity to show the passage of time and events effectively in our film using conventions such as shot reverse shot, when the characters are talking to each other and the 180 degree rule, as not to make the film look confusing and relative to the space in which the characters are in. We used certain editing techniques to add music to the film and created a certain atmosphere by altering the lighting and the level of focus in certain shots to make the audience experience a specific feeling.
Our film reflects the generic conventions of a gang crime thriller as there are many instances in the film that fit conventions often displayed in films with the same genre. it does not challenge any existing conventions nor does it subvert expectations in any way as both the main actors are male and the only other character is only in for one scene, has no lines and is female.
There are some scenes in the film that are inspired by real media products that belong to the same genre. For example the opening scene of the film was inspired by the scene from pulp fiction where Samuel.L.Jackson and John Travolta are talking while taking things out of the boot of a car.
With this film, we tried to provide the audience with an intense and energetic aspect of entertainment in accordance of richard dyers theory of audience entertainment. I believe that we have adequately achieved this by editing the heist scene to look fast paced and more like an action film than the other scenes in the film.
our film could be compared to film such as pulp fiction and reservoir dogs. this is because the film has similar circumstances to the situation in reservoir dogs as it features a heist that, while is initially successful, ends in the death of one of the criminals. the film also uses cinematography in a similar way to pulp fiction e.g. the car boot scene.
